Shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, police in Anne Arundel County say Edgewater resident Joseph Henry Illig Jr., 63, was involved in a crash on Mitchells Chance Road near Hamlet Club Drive.
Investigators say a 2020 Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the center of the roadway and struck a 2015 Ford pickup traveling in the opposite direction.
Mary Elizabeth Cox, 74, a passenger of the Ford sustained critical injuries and was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
She died from her injuries over the weekend, the Anne Arundel County Police Department announced.
Neither driver was injured. Illig was arrested and charged with:
- Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol;
- Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol per se;
- Driving a vehicle while impaired by alcohol;
- Violations of TR 21-902 A, B, C, or D with two previous convictions;
- Life-threatening injury by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
"Investigators with the Anne Arundel County Police Crash Reconstruction Team continue to investigate this incident and will be in consultation with the Office of the State's Attorney regarding any applicable additional charges," officials said.
